Part 2: Choosing a Cloud Nine Mattress - Full Body Support

Cloud Nine Beds Are Orthopaedic but Which Model Should You Choose to Ensure Optimum Support?

In part 1 we looked at why any Cloud Nine mattress is orthopedic (built with support for your back in mind) and with thanks to the High Density Foam Support Core how they differ fundamentally from a spring mattress. It's Touchy Feely time now so lets look at the additional layers of foam within the mattress surrounding the core that determine a particular model's unique feel. In addition durability is a key factor.

Keyword: Multi-layer! Layers of Foam for Durabilty.

Cloud Nine Mattresses have Multiple Layers of Foam:

Every Cloud Nine mattress has comfort and support layers of foam in addition to the support core.
Layers for firm high-density buoyant layer (for support and comfort)
Layers for soft high-density buoyant layer (for comfort)
Layers for luxurious layer of buoyant foam (for specific comfort options e.g. Memory Foam)
These layers of foam are varied in hardness and density to provide for the unique feel of the mattress and the weight bearing capacity as required for a particular model.

Just like lengths of wood that are laminated together is stronger than a single plank, so is a mattress containing multiple layers of foam. Multiple layer foam mattresses are more durable and can be tailored by the factory to provided for a wider range of comfort options and usage requirements.
This is why a more luxurious mattress tends to be thicker and thinner mattresses tend to be firm. The thinner the mattress is, the less space there is available for comfort layers in addition to the support layers required to maintain the correct level of durability.

Weight Bearing Capacity?

Cloud Nine (and many other manufacturers too) have stipulated a recommended maximum weight bearing capacity for each model in their range. You can think of the weight guide as the amount (level) of support that the mattress can provide. You should choose a model with a weight stipulation that exceeds the weight of the heaviest person to use the mattress. We suggest as a rule of thumb that you choose a mattress with a margin of at least 10% to extend the effective lifespan.
There is nothing preventing a heavy person from using an entry level mattress, but the mattress will not provide adequate support and deteriorate quickly. Not ensuring the correct level of support is possibly the most frequent reason that mattresses fail sooner than expected.

The weight guideline assumes that the mattress is for use under typical everyday conditions of an average of 8 hours sleep per day. Given this and in keeping with the manufacturer's mattress maintenance requirements you can expect that your mattress will provide the correct level of support over the intended lifespan of the mattress.

Weight bearing capacity is not an indication of comfort. I.e. A heavy duty mattress is not necessarily firm. For instance it may be for this reason that someone weighing only 85kg's may decide to buy a heavy duty mattress with a weight guide of 120kgs per person or more.
The decision to purchase the mattress is based on the desired type comfort and the weight guide is not really a factor. Another instance where it's advisable to increase the support level is in any situation where the mattress will be used for longer than average lengths of time each day, such as in cases necessitated through disability.

Considering the guidelines for support that we've mentioned, it should be much easier to select suitable mattress options. You'll find that having done this you will be left with far fewer options and that now it's only a matter of selecting the feel (comfort type) you prefer from what remains.

In the next article (Part 3), we're going to focus on comfort. The correct level of comfort is vital. There is no point being uncomfortable on a mattress if it only ticks the durability box!
